Xã Long Phước a quiet ward in Thu Duc City. It holds a vital place in Vietnamese history. Its strategic location made it a key battleground during the wars against the French and the Americans. The people of Long Phước however refused to yield. They carved their defiance into the very ground beneath their feet.
The tunnels began humbly. A simple bomb crater became a refuge. Mr Nam Hoi’s experience during a French raid inspired a community effort. They dug. They expanded. They interconnected shelters under houses and temples. These were not mere hiding places. They became intricate networks. These tunnels served as homes hospitals and armories.
By 1949 300 meters of tunnels had been completed. They were three meters deep and 0.8 meters wide. Hidden chambers and defensive positions were cleverly incorporated. These tunnels were instrumental in thwarting a major French offensive. The Xuyen Phuoc Co base was secured. The people of Xã Long Phước had proven their strength.
Further expansion took place in 1963. The tunnels stretched from Dong hamlet to Bac hamlet. New sections were added for fighting positions weapon storage and medical facilities. A deadly trap was cleverly built near Nam hamlet. This network helped the Vietnamese forces inflict heavy losses on the enemy. The battle of April 1 and April 7 1963 are prime examples. The enemy was repelled. The tunnels held firm.
Operation Enogerra in 1966 targeted the Xã Long Phước tunnels. The Australian 6RAR attempted to destroy the tunnels and supplies. The legacy of this operation is still visible in the area.
