From a brewery to a beacon of creativity. That’s the story of the Dortmunder U – Zentrum für Kunst und Kreativität. The Dortmunder U towers over the city, a golden “U” crowning its rooftop. This iconic “U,” a restored relic of its brewing past, now symbolizes Dortmund’s transformation. The Dortmunder U wasn’t always a haven for artists. It began its life in 1926 as a brewery, designed by Emil Moog for the Dortmunder Union-Brauerei. The building, operational by 1927, served as a cooling, fermentation, and storage facility. It remained a vital part of Germany’s largest brewery for almost 70 years, until 1994. The golden “U” was added to the rooftop in 1968. It quickly became a city landmark, shining brightly over Dortmund. After the brewery relocated, the Dortmunder U stood empty for four years. In 1998, it briefly housed the exhibition “Reservate der Sehnsucht” (“Reservations of Longing”), showcasing video installations and artwork. This marked the beginning of its transformation. The city of Dortmund acquired the site in 2007. The surrounding buildings were demolished, leaving only the historically protected U-Tower. With the European Capital of Culture – RUHR.2010 on the horizon, the city transformed the Dortmunder U.
