Beneath the intricate overpasses of Shibalidian, a story unfolds. Shibalidian North Bridge, a crucial part of this transportation hub, connects the bustling 4th Ring Road with the Jingjintang Expressway. Shibalidian, meaning “a shop at 18 li,” hints at its distance from the former city center. This “li,” a traditional Chinese unit, equals half a kilometer. While “dian” translates to “shop,” it doesn’t necessarily indicate a specific store but rather marks a place. Shibalidian wasn’t always a major junction. Before the 4th Ring Road, it was a relatively insignificant location on the outskirts of Beijing. It marked Exit No. 1 on the Jingjintang Expressway, opened in 1993. The 4th Ring Road transformed Shibalidian into a vital transportation node. The surge in trade led to the establishment of the Beijing Chaoyang Port nearby. In 2004, Shibalidian became even more important. The Beijing Municipal Public Security Ministry moved its Vehicle Management authorities from Beiyuan to this burgeoning hub. Shibalidian also represents a significant point in the city’s road network. The eastern part of the 4th Ring Road terminates here. Until 2001, vehicles couldn’t continue further east except by merging onto the Jingjintang Expressway. Shibalidian North Bridge, alongside Shibalidian Bridge and Shibalidian South Bridge, forms the complex overpass system that has reshaped this once quiet area.
