Shimmering tiles. That’s the first thing you notice about the Shish Gumbad. Its name means Glass Dome and that’s no exaggeration.

Welcome to this architectural marvel in Delhi’s Lodhi Gardens. Shish Gumbad is a mausoleum a testament to the Lodhi dynasty’s power and artistry. Built between 1489 and 1517 during Sikandar Lodi’s reign it perfectly blends Islamic and Indian styles.

The Shish Gumbad isn’t just a pretty face. Its square shape is unusual. The structure uses a combination of bracket and lintel beams a unique technique. It’s approximately 10 meters tall. Red sandstone and marble form its exterior. The interior though is where the magic happens. The central dome gleams with blue and green glass tiles. They create a mesmerizing shimmering effect.

The dome isn’t just decorative. The black stone calligraphy and geometric patterns add to its religious significance. It’s believed to have served as a mosque too. A mihrab a prayer niche on the western wall proves this. The main chamber is surprisingly small only 10 square meters. It holds several graves. Their identities are lost to time. Some suggest it is Bahlul Lodi the dynasty’s founder others believe it houses an unknown noble family. The mystery adds to its allure.

The Shish Gumbad has seen its share of history. The British restored it in the early 20th century. They also enclosed it to prevent vandalism. Today the Archaeological Survey of India protects this precious piece of history. You can visit for free. You can marvel at its beauty in the serene Lodhi Gardens.

Think of the stories these walls could tell. The builders’ skill the lives lived within. The Shish Gumbad isn’t just a building. It is a living link to Delhi’s vibrant past a testament to enduring beauty and a window to a fascinating era. Enjoy its splendor. Let its shimmering beauty transport you to another time.
