The Berlin Blockade of 1948 changed everything. West Berlin needed supplies. Berlin-Tegel Otto Lilienthal Airport became a lifeline. A 2428-meter runway was built the longest in Europe at the time. Planes landed carrying vital supplies cheese among them. A plane touched down every 30 seconds. Berlin-Tegel Otto Lilienthal Airport kept the city alive.

In 1960 the first commercial flight took off from Berlin-Tegel Otto Lilienthal Airport. Air France started using the airport. Its long runway was perfect for their new jet planes.
