“Ong” Ca Dang Van Truoc. A name whispered with reverence, a figure shrouded in local lore. Here at Đền thờ ông cả Đặng Văn Trước, the spirit of this remarkable man lingers. Đền thờ ông cả Đặng Văn Trước stands as a testament to his enduring legacy.

Đặng Văn Trước, also known as Đặng Dây Dưa, hailed from An Nam district in Bình Định province. He was one of three brothers who journeyed south, seeking fortune and new beginnings. Đặng Văn Trước arrived in the area known as Bến Đồn, somewhere between the present-day Búng Binh and Hồ Bò. This area was located within Tổng Dương Hòa district, Bình Dương county. He humbly began his career as a village clerk.

Later, he moved to what is now Trảng Bàng and established Phước Lộc village. This village played a key role in the development of Trảng Bàng district and its history. In 1822, during the reign of Minh Mạng, he was promoted to village head. He oversaw the expansion of Phước Lộc village, involving the digging of canals, the building of roads, and even land reclamation extending into the neighboring Bình Tĩnh village. These actions led to a dispute that eventually reached the Tả Thừa Ty court for resolution.

During his time, the region faced frequent raids by Siamese forces, who crossed the border to plunder and terrorize the local population. Đặng Văn Trước led the local militia in defense of their homes and lands, repelling these incursions. His bravery secured the area and expanded the village’s borders, bringing peace and prosperity to the people. For his service, he earned the title of “Cả,” a term of respect given to village leaders.

In 1826, a theft occurred within the area under his administration. Despite being investigated, he was found to have no involvement and was released. However, on his way home, tragedy struck near Trương Chùa Bridge, near Cây Cao Hamlet. He was found dead, poisoned.

Đặng Văn Trước passed away on March 5th, 1826, leaving a void in the community. To honor his contributions, the villagers built a shrine near Búng Binh Đồn Thuận. Later, Đền thờ ông cả Đặng Văn Trước was erected in Trảng Bàng. This shrine, located in what is now Trảng Bàng Town, houses the family records and serves as a venue for the annual festival honoring Đặng Văn Trước, held on the 5th and 6th of the third lunar month. The Đền thờ ông cả Đặng Văn Trước reflects traditional Vietnamese architecture, with a three-section design. It features a front hall, main worship hall, and a rear chamber, all adorned with traditional ornamentation.

Today, Đền thờ ông cả Đặng Văn Trước stands as a powerful reminder of Đặng Văn Trước’s dedication to his community. It serves as a place to connect with the spirit of a man who shaped the destiny of Trảng Bàng.
