“This cave has such a specific name” you might think. Gruta Metiaut 11 de Fevereiro de 2008. Let me tell you why. On February 11th, 2008, this tranquil beach witnessed a terrifying event. President José Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was jogging along this very stretch of sand. As he neared his residence, rebel soldiers ambushed him, leaving him critically injured. Ramos-Horta survived the assassination attempt. He was rushed to Australia for treatment. This attack left a scar on Timor-Leste’s young democracy. The Gruta Metiaut 11 de Fevereiro de 2008, named for that fateful day, stands as a solemn reminder of the fragility of peace. But also of the resilience of the human spirit.
