Built in the mid-1930s The Corner House stands proudly. It’s at the southern edge of Headington. Precisely at the end of The Slade. This pub sits where Horpath Driftway meets Hollow Way. Its address 236 Hollow Way is etched in local memory.

The Corner House isn’t just a pub. It’s a piece of living history. Soldiers from the nearby Cowley Barracks left their mark during World War II. They painted murals inside. These murals are now protected. They are a testament to a time of conflict and camaraderie.

The Corner House faced challenges. In 2013 Marston’s Brewery sold it. New River Retail wanted to turn it into a convenience store. Local residents fought back. They successfully nominated it as an Asset of Community Value. This ensured its survival as a beloved pub.

The Corner House has seen many landlords. From Alexander Carmichael in 1936 to W. Clarke in 1956. Each landlord shaped its story. Each contributed to its unique character. The pub’s history is woven into the fabric of Headington itself.

Extensive renovations took place in 2018. The Corner House emerged refreshed. It continues to serve the community. It continues to tell its story. It is more than just a building. The Corner House is a vital part of Headington’s heritage. A place where history and community intertwine. A true Oxford landmark.
