How many churches can say they were founded twice? Saint Johns Baptist Church in Houston can. Its story begins in 1899 with Reverend Gilbert Green and Reverend Hilliard R. Johnson, who established the first iteration of Saint Johns in Houston’s Third Ward. A split in the congregation in 1915 led Reverend Johnson and several hundred members to start anew, ultimately finding a home for Saint Johns on Dowling Street. This time, the church truly flourished. Under the leadership of Reverend Nathaniel C. Crain, who became pastor in 1925, Saint Johns saw significant growth. This growth necessitated a larger space, and in 1946, construction began on a new sanctuary. This impressive building, designed by prominent Black architect James M. Thomas, still stands today. Its Gothic Revival style is a testament to the enduring legacy of Saint Johns and its place in Houston’s history.
