What if I told you that right here lies Denmark’s largest waterfall? Welcome to Døndalen a lush rift valley on Bornholm. This valley isn’t just any crack in the earth. Døndalen is a story etched in stone and flowing water.

Døndalen covers 37 hectares. A third of this area is untouched forest. The Danish Nature Foundation protects this natural haven since 1975. They ensure its beauty remains unspoiled.

Døndale Å runs through the valley’s heart. The stream cascades down almost 20 meters. This creates Døndalsfaldet. It is Denmark’s largest waterfall. While impressive year-round, winter and spring unveil its true power. Meltwater swells the stream transforming the falls into a thundering spectacle.

Look up at the 20-meter cliff face on Døndalen’s northwest side. It leads to Amtmandsstenen. From this viewpoint, gaze out over the treetops. On a clear day, you can see the Baltic Sea and Christiansø. Legend says ancient people once made sacrifices here. They cast animals and humans from Amtmandsstenen to appease the gods.

Take a stroll through Døndalen. Even inexperienced hikers can enjoy its beauty. The easiest path to the waterfall is under 2 km. It is a round trip. It winds through well-maintained forest paths. For a challenge, climb the stairs to Amtmandsstenen. The breathtaking view is your reward.

Experienced hikers can venture beyond the waterfall. A 4 km route leads to Røvejen. From there, admire the entire valley. Notice the contrast between the park-like area near the parking lot. Compare it to the pristine forest further in.

Døndalen differs from other Bornholm valleys because it is wider. This is due to its unique geological origin. A portion of the bedrock sank creating a burial depression.

Keep an eye out for the wildlife. The lush vegetation supports diverse species. The large red-brown Scandinavian squirrels with dark tails are common. From October to March, look for the white-throated dipper. It fearlessly dives into the cold stream for food. In the fall, sea trout swim up the stream to spawn.

Døndalen offers a sensory feast throughout the year. In spring, the forest floor bursts with anemones and the pungent aroma of ramsløg. The nightingale’s song echoes between the cliffs.

As you leave Døndalen remember the valley’s rich tapestry of nature and history. It is a place where water thunders. Forests teem with life. Ancient legends linger.
