Whispers of history echo through Dublin Bay North. This constituency wasn’t always called Dublin Bay North. Its story begins much earlier with its predecessors Dublin North-Central and Dublin North-East. These areas existed long before 2016 the year Dublin Bay North was first contested.

Dublin North-Central’s electoral history stretches back to 1948. Dublin North-East’s roots delve even deeper to 1937. But the boundaries shifted. Until the 1970s Dublin North-Central was essentially a North-Inner City constituency. Clontarf was its northernmost point until 1981. Dublin North-East expanded gradually to encompass the northern suburbs. By the 1960s it roughly covered the modern Dublin Bay North. It was abolished in 1977. It reappeared in its current form in 1981.

Many prominent figures shaped Dublin Bay North’s political landscape. George Colley a Fianna Fáil member was initially friends with Charles J Haughey. Later they became bitter rivals. Michael O’Leary originally from the Labour Party made a dramatic switch to Fine Gael in 1982. Luke Belton of the Belton political dynasty also left his mark. Charles Haughey himself shifted from Dublin North-East to Dublin North-Central in 1981. Noel Browne’s last election victory was in 1981 representing the Socialist Labour Party. Richard Bruton a Fine Gael stalwart was first elected in February 1982. Finian McGrath served as Minister of State from 2016 to 2020 as an Independent.

The electoral battles were often fiercely fought. In 1981 Charlie Haughey secured a massive 43.5% of the vote. His running mates benefited but it was still insufficient for three of the four seats. Fianna Fáil finally took three seats in 1989 with 51.6% of the vote. In 1997 Labour’s Derek McDowell witnessed a staggering 70% drop in his vote. He still managed to secure the last seat. He narrowly beat environmental campaigner Sean Dublin Bay Loftus.

The 2020 election marked the retirement of two left-wing Independents Finian McGrath and Tommy Broughan. They were succeeded by Cian O’Callaghan of the Social Democrats and Aodhán Ó Ríordáin. The election highlighted the constituency’s centre-left leanings. A Social Democrat and a Labour candidate won seats. A Green Party candidate was also a runner-up. Their combined votes were highest in coastal areas. Areas like Howth saw over 40% support. In Darndale their support was under 5% demonstrating a clear social class divide.

Dublin Bay North is more than just election results. It is a rich tapestry woven from history politics and the lives of its people. It is a constituency where the past continues to resonate in the present shaping its future. The story of Dublin Bay North is a story of change resilience and the enduring spirit of its community.
