What if these walls could talk? They would tell tales of resilience. They would speak of a nation’s fight for freedom. Welcome to the Museum Resistensia de Timor-Leste.

This museum stands as a testament to the Timorese people’s unwavering spirit. It honors their long struggle against Indonesian occupation. The Museum Resistensia de Timor-Leste is more than just a building. It is a place of memory. It is a space for learning. It is a tribute to the heroes of Timor-Leste.

The museum was created in 2005. It preserves the memory of Timor-Leste’s resistance. It is dedicated to promoting the values of their fight for freedom. The museum focuses on the younger generation. It aims to instill in them a sense of national identity.

Before becoming a museum, this site was the Portuguese Court of Justice. The violent events of 1999 destroyed the court. The new museum incorporates some elements of the old structure. Most of it is a brand new building. By Timorese standards, it is quite impressive.

The museum’s permanent exhibition opened in 2012. A newer annex features ethnographic and traditional art. The Museum Resistensia de Timor-Leste serves as a place of study and conservation. It preserves eyewitness accounts and historical documents.

Inside, the museum is modern and comprehensive. The exhibition uses contemporary museum design. It incorporates multimedia elements. All texts and labels are trilingual. They are in Portuguese, Tetum, and English.

The exhibition is organized chronologically. It follows a timeline divided into different periods. Large text-and-photo panels explain the history. The museum also displays artifacts. You will see guns, radio equipment, and flags. There is even a barred prison door. A mock-up shows a protester climbing the US embassy fence in Jakarta.

The narrative begins with Timor-Leste’s pre-history. It covers the colonial period. It details the preparations for the Indonesian invasion. The exhibition does not shy away from pointing fingers. Australia and the USA are criticized for their roles. The Indonesians are not portrayed favorably.

The Museum Resistensia de Timor-Leste presents a tone of glorification of the Timorese resistance. However, it is restrained in its condemnation. It lets the facts speak for themselves. The exhibition is rich in factual information. Documents are presented in facsimile form. Accompanying texts provide further explanation.

The exhibition covers the Indonesian suppression of East Timor. It shows the resistance fight. It leads up to the 1999 referendum. It ends with the achievement of full independence. The latter is celebrated with gusto.

Grim photos and documentary footage are displayed. You can see excerpts from the Santa Cruz massacre. Footage of the 1999 violence is also shown. An interactive touchscreen provides even more information.

One unique feature is a mock-up of a clandestine resistance cell. You can peer inside to see a bed, typewriter, and ladder. There is also an auditorium for film screenings.

At the time of my visit in late August 2014, there was an exhibition called “our inheritance”. It showcased arts and crafts objects.

Before you leave, visit the foyer. There are more objects of interest. The shop sells souvenirs. You can also buy the museum catalogue. It contains all the exhibition texts. It includes reproductions of photos and documents.
