Ruined yet regal Villa Valbissera stands before you. A once-grand 19th-century villa it now whispers tales of faded glory. It belonged to Giovanbattista Sommariva surrounded by thriving vineyards. Enrico Morini a wine magnate bought it. He envisioned a resort producing and serving exquisite wines.

Unfortunately his winery plans failed. This marked the beginning of Villa Valbissera’s decline. Construction stopped. For over twenty years it has remained untouched a ghostly shell. The beautiful church of Sant’Eurosia on the estate shares a similar fate. Despite looting and neglect it retains some of its ancient charm.

Legend says Eurosia a noblewoman from Bayonne refused to marry a Muslim commander. She fled to the mountains. Her pursuers brutally murdered her. Her cult possibly spread by Spanish soldiers and the Somaschi congregation from Bergamo. The story may blend pagan elements and legends. Eurosia became a saint. Soldiers invoked her in battle spreading her fame. She was known as the protector of crops invoked against storms. Perhaps this is why the church was dedicated to her. Ironically the saint who could stop storms and protect harvests could not prevent human negligence and bureaucracy from ruining her namesake church and villa.

Villa Valbissera’s story is one of ambition failure and the passage of time. The magnificent vineyard remains a testament to a dream left unfulfilled. Yet this abandoned beauty holds a certain melancholic allure. It hints at a lost world of elegance and prosperity. Today the villa awaits a new chapter a new owner to revive its splendor. Yet the silence speaks volumes of a past that refuses to be forgotten.
