Have you ever wondered what keeps Hamburg’s port humming? Right here, at the Finkenwerder Brücke, you find a vital artery of this bustling maritime world. This bridge isn’t just a way across the water. It’s the lifeline connecting Finkenwerder Strasse to the container terminals, Hamburg (CTH) and Burchardkai (CTB). The Finkenwerder Brücke carries the heavy weight of Hamburg’s port traffic, both literally and figuratively. Originally built in 1970, the Finkenwerder Brücke started as a two-part structure of reinforced concrete. Each part had two spans and rested on deep foundations. They shared supporting pillars and a central cross beam. The bridge curved to follow the road below. This design, however, had a weakness. The concrete was susceptible to alkali-silica reactions, sometimes called “concrete cancer.” Cracks began appearing around 1980. By 2012, regular monitoring was necessary. A 2014 study confirmed the problem. The “cancer” was spreading. The bridge’s stability and usability were at risk. A new Finkenwerder Brücke was essential. Replacing the Finkenwerder Brücke was a delicate operation. Keeping the port running meant maintaining traffic flow during construction. This led to a two-phase project. From early 2022 to autumn 2023, the southern part of the bridge was rebuilt. Traffic was diverted to the northern section. Then, from autumn 2023 to mid-2025, the northern part was replaced. This intricate dance of construction and traffic control minimized disruptions to the port’s operations. Complete weekend closures were unavoidable, but they were strategically timed. The Easter and Pentecost holidays in 2022 and 2024 were used for major works, like demolishing sections of the old bridge and sliding the new structures into place. This minimized the impact on port businesses. The new Finkenwerder Brücke is a testament to modern engineering. Two tied-arch bridges made of steel replaced the old concrete structures. Each bridge has a single span and an orthotropic roadway. The northern bridge spans approximately 48 meters. The southern bridge stretches to about 59 meters. The entire bridge is about 38 meters wide, with three 3.5-meter lanes on each side, plus a combined pedestrian and bicycle path of 2.65 meters on each side. The adjacent sections of Finkenwerder Strasse were also renovated and adapted to fit the new bridge. The entire construction area covered about 230 meters.
