Republican soldiers under Colonel Romero a retired professional soldier fighting for the Republic. They were ready. They were waiting. His troops primarily Assault Guards were skilled marksmen. Early in the Battle of Madrid they successfully prevented the bridge from being crossed. After months of blocking the advance of tanks and infantry they ultimately destroyed the bridge.

The trucks and their drivers became easy targets. The curve earned its chilling name Curva de la Muerte the Curve of Death. It whispers of lost lives. It echoes with the sounds of gunfire and the groans of the dying.

Today Curva de la Muerte stands as a solemn reminder. A reminder of sacrifice and courage a reminder of the cost of war. The curve itself is a quiet observer. It has witnessed so much. It remembers the fear the desperation the raw courage of those who fought there.
