Maybury State Park in Northville Township Michigan is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of nature. Opened in 1971 the park occupies 944 acres of land. It was once the site of the Maybury Sanatorium. Thousands of people suffering from consumption were brought here. The hope was the fresh air and peaceful surroundings would aid their recovery. Infirmaries houses children’s playgrounds and even a school stood here. Most of these structures are gone now. Only four stone and brick doctors’ residences remain a poignant reminder of the past. One serves as park headquarters. This new facility replaced an older brick building near Beck Road. That older building was demolished in 2023 after the Northville Township Fire Department used it for training.
Maybury State Park offers much more than a glimpse into the past. There are miles of trails perfect for hiking biking and even horseback riding. The tranquil ponds are ideal for fishing. Picnic areas and playgrounds make it a perfect family destination. Adjacent to the park Maybury Farm offers educational programs sheep shearing hay rides and a corn maze. It’s a working farm demonstrating agricultural practices. The farm faced a devastating fire in 2003 which destroyed barns and killed animals. Thanks to a public fundraising campaign it was rebuilt. Even 125-year-old barns were moved from a nearby town to ensure the farm’s continued legacy.
