“Step through the door and your journey begins.” This inscription welcomes you to The Path of Life Sculpture. Mayor Duggan dedicated this striking 42-foot sculpture. It stands in the newly renovated Riverside Park. The Path of Life marks the beginning of the Joe Louis Greenway. The Adamo family commissioned Detroit artists Israel and Erik Nordin to create it. The sculpture celebrates Detroit’s renaissance. It also celebrates the path toward a brighter future.

The Path of Life Sculpture incorporates steel from Joe Louis Arena. This infusion of history captures the arena’s memory. It also echoes Detroit’s current rebirth. The Nordin Brothers have worked in Detroit for decades. Their Detroit Design Center includes a studio and gallery. Their artwork graces locations from Belle Isle to Muskegon.

Richard Adamo said his family is honored to participate in creating The Path of Life. The Adamo organization has been rooted in Detroit since 1964. They dedicate artifacts that memorialize renowned structures. They also honor the namesakes of those structures.

Creating The Path of Life took about a year. Integrating I-beams from Joe Louis Arena was challenging. Erik and Israel Nordin love hockey. Joe Louis Arena was a magical place to them. Public art brings people together. It inspires thought and creates conversations. Detroit is their city where they live, work, and create.

During the Riverside Park Master Planning process, an iconic focal point was needed. Tim Karl knew The Path of Life belonged at Riverside Park. The beams from Joe Louis Arena stand at the foot of West Grand Boulevard. This location is part of the Joe Louis Greenway.

Leona Medley said Detroit is a cosmopolitan city where culture and art converge. The Path of Life Sculpture exemplifies creative genius. It also amplifies powerful voices.

The Path of Life is a set of three sculptures. There are two sculptural walls with doorways. The main sculpture stands 40 feet tall. I-beams form the sculpture. Turns in the piece represent life’s changes. The Nordins believe cities undergo changes just like people. Successes and struggles shape our lives.

A stainless-steel Gridcube represents a city’s topographical map. Buildings, streets, and cars form this architecture. The cube symbolizes Detroit’s heart growing skyward. Its path leads the way. Blue hand-cast glass symbolizes Michigan’s precious water.

LifeTree steel walls stem from a deconstructed cube. Doorways invite you to travel through them. This deconstructed cube symbolizes our foundations. It represents family and the city. It also symbolizes the strength of a handshake. Previous generations can open doors for future generations. Together, we can create a brighter future for our city.

The Nordin Brothers create statement pieces. They are one-of-a-kind objects that tell your story. They specialize in glass, metal, wood, and other mediums. The Detroit Design Center is home to their work. The Nordins have created objects in Detroit for 20 years. Their studio is a 12000 sq ft space with two cranes. The Detroit Design Center Gallery is in Midtown.
