Was there ever a Hungarian more globally minded than János Xántus? The Ju00e1nos Xu00e1ntus Statue stands here in Bangkok as a testament to this extraordinary man’s legacy. Born in 1825, Xántus was a man of boundless energy and insatiable curiosity. An ethnologist, zoologist, and natural scientist, the Ju00e1nos Xu00e1ntus Statue captures him in his element – a man of action and adventure. Xántus’s life reads like an Indiana Jones script. He participated in the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution. After its failure, he was captured and conscripted into the Austrian army. He escaped and made his way to America. In America, he worked odd jobs before becoming involved in expeditions charting the American West. He even served as a Union medic during the Civil War! Throughout his travels, Xántus passionately documented his findings, amassing a significant collection of flora and fauna. His research earned him recognition from the Smithsonian and a coveted membership in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1859. In 1868, Xántus embarked on a three-year expedition to East and Southeast Asia. He traveled extensively, collecting specimens and artifacts which formed the foundation of the Ethnographic Collection at the Hungarian National Museum. Xántus tirelessly advocated for the establishment of a national zoo in Budapest, a dream that was realized in 1866. He later became the first director of the Ethnographic Department at the Hungarian National Museum. He dedicated his life to understanding diverse cultures and the natural world. He died in Budapest in 1894. The Ju00e1nos Xu00e1ntus Statue isn’t just a monument. It’s a tribute to a man who never stopped exploring, learning, and contributing to our understanding of the world.
