Beneath the watchful gaze of a majestic American eagle, the Hurlbut Memorial Gate stands proudly. It marks the entrance to Detroit’s Water Works Park. Do you know the story behind this grand gateway? The Hurlbut Memorial Gate is more than just an impressive structure. It’s a testament to the generosity of one man and the architectural vision of a bygone era. Chauncey Hurlbut, a 19th-century Detroit grocer and philanthropist, left a significant portion of his wealth to beautify Water Works Park upon his death in 1885. His vision was brought to life by architects Herman A. Brede and Gustave Mueller. Constructed in 1894, the Hurlbut Memorial Gate is a triumphal arch. It’s a stunning 132 feet long, over 50 feet high, and 40 feet deep, built from beautiful limestone. Carved garlands, water fonts, and roundels adorn its surface. The gate originally housed a statue of Hurlbut himself and an ornamental iron gate. Sadly, both are now gone. However, a significant restoration in 2007 breathed new life into this historic landmark. Damaged limestone was meticulously repaired or replaced. The stairway was reconfigured. The iconic eagle sculpture and light fixtures were also carefully restored. The Hurlbut Memorial Gate is a symbol of Detroit’s rich history and a tribute to the legacy of Chauncey Hurlbut. As you admire its grandeur, remember the vision of the man who made it possible.
