Marvelous aren’t they? Those two asymmetrical towers flanking the Igreja Paroquial da Senhora da Conceicao. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to Neo-Gothic revival architecture. Standing proudly in Porto it boasts a longitudinal plan with three naves. A narthex baptistery and high choir enhance its grandeur. Ten side chapels add to its intricate design.

The Igreja Paroquial da Senhora da Conceicao’s construction was a late entry in the Neo-Gothic revival style. Its exterior is dominated by those striking towers. The taller one reaches a breathtaking fifty-six meters at its highest point. A stunning detail. The lower tower stands at 31 meters. But look closer. Inside you’ll find subtle nods to Byzantine and Arab art. The lace-like detailing on the arches and friezes of the columns is exquisite.

The main facade oriented east is crafted from finely worked ashlar. It features a triangular pediment adorned with a high-relief of the Immaculate Conception. Two adoring angels flank the Madonna. But the real artistic treasures are the four buttresses flanking the three doorways. These buttresses support sculptures of Santo Antonio Sao Joao de Deus Beato Nuno Alvares Pereira and Sao Joao de Brito. Each sculpture stands two and a half meters tall a truly impressive sight. The curved doorways themselves are works of art. Above each arch are fourteen square and five triangular openings filled with clear glass on the outside. Yellow glass graces the inside. Nine small rectangular windows with angular finishes top the sculptures.

Let’s step inside. The interior is a harmonious blend of light and shadow. Numerous pentagonal windows filled with stained glass bathe the space in a kaleidoscopic glow. This creates a truly stunning effect. Note the high vaulted ceilings separated by beams with concave circular cutouts. These beams extend from the chancel arch to the main facade. The ten side chapels in the nave are identical in structure. Their central walls are decorated with figurative azulejos. These tiles depict scenes of devotion to the Virgin Mary. They are framed with marble inlays of various colors. A subtle detail many miss is the single step separating the nave floor from the chapel floor. All chapels are paved with black marble.

Notice the fourteen panels depicting the Stations of the Cross above the chapel entrances. These frescoes are rich in color. The majority of figures are in shades of brown or sepia. The soldiers and Christ’s cloak are rendered in striking red. Christ’s shroud and his mother’s robes are pure white. The impressive pipe organ in the high choir is another highlight. It has three manuals and a total of 2660 pipes. 266 pipes are made of wood. The remaining 2394 are made of metal. This magnificent instrument weighs twelve thousand kilos.
