Historic Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church

A grand cathedral stood before us. It whispered tales of transformation. This is the Historic Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church. It has a fascinating journey. It began humbly in April 1936. A small group of six worshippers, led by Reverend Robert E. Tate, founded the church. They first met in a home on Willis Street. The Historic Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church thrived. It soon outgrew the small space. The congregation moved to Russell Street, then to Mack Avenue under Reverend Theodore R. Provost. The church continued its journey. It found a home on Maxwell Street with Reverend Clarence Townsell. In 1972, Reverend Jim Holley became pastor. Under his leadership, the Historic Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church experienced tremendous growth. This led to a significant move in 1979. The church acquired its current magnificent home at 9000 Woodward Avenue. This neo-gothic structure was originally the Central Woodward Christian Church. The original congregation had relocated. This grand building, with its rich history, became the new home of the Historic Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church. The church’s growth continued at its new location. The mortgage was paid off in 1987. A major renovation took place in 1990. Stained glass windows were added, enhancing the beauty of the space. Improvements were made to the pastor’s study, choir loft, pulpit area, lower auditorium, kitchen, and restrooms. Today, the Historic Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church continues its mission. It serves the community with a variety of programs and ministries. It stands as a testament to the power of faith and community.
