Amidst the bustling urban landscape of Seoul, discover the serene Chuwonjae. This isn’t just another temple. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Chuwonjae holds the spirit of Kim Ja-su, a loyal subject of the Goryeo dynasty. His story began in 1351. He excelled in the state examination of 1374, rising through the ranks of the Goryeo government. His filial piety was legendary. Upon his mother’s passing, he observed a three-year mourning period by her tomb.

Chuwonjae initially stood in Nosan-ri, near his mother’s tomb. However, the construction of the Andong Dam necessitated its relocation in 1973. It now finds its home here, within the historic heart of Seoul. Kim Ja-su’s loyalty to the Goryeo dynasty ultimately led to his tragic demise. When the Joseon dynasty ascended, he chose suicide over serving the new regime. His unwavering devotion echoes through Chuwonjae.

The architecture of Chuwonjae reflects traditional Korean design. The central structure features an underfloor-heated room. Wooden-floored porches extend to the front and sides. The room itself is divided into two sections, a front room and a rear room, separated by a door. This division creates distinct spaces for contemplation and ritual. Outside, a stele stands as a testament to Kim Ja-su’s filial devotion. It serves as a poignant reminder of his unwavering respect for his mother.

Chuwonjae stands as more than just a ritual house. It’s a poignant reminder of loyalty, filial piety, and the enduring power of the human spirit. It offers a quiet sanctuary amidst the vibrant city, a place to reflect on the past and connect with the timeless values embodied by Kim Ja-su. The serenity of Chuwonjae offers a stark contrast to the surrounding urban dynamism. Within its walls, the whispers of history invite contemplation and offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Korea.
