Raymond Rimkus’s little store buzzed with activity. It was more than just a market. It was the heart of Leon Valley. It was 1952. A chance encounter with a reporter revealed San Antonio’s plan to annex Leon Valley. Rimkus, the future mayor, sounded the alarm. Leon Valley wasn’t just a collection of farms on Bandera Road. It was a community. The residents valued their independence. They rallied against annexation. A petition circulated. Within hours, 133 signatures declared their intent to incorporate. The Leon Valley Incorporation Association formed, led by Rimkus. They faced challenges. San Antonio pushed back. But Leon Valley persevered. On March 31, 1952, Leon Valley officially became a city. The residents chose self-governance. They chose community. This spirit continues today in Leon Valley. The city boasts a public library and is part of the Northside Independent School District. It strives to blend new growth with its rich history. Leon Valley embraces its small-town charm within a bustling metropolitan area. It’s a place where the fire chief knows your name. A place where “Big city advantages, small town hospitality” isn’t just a motto. It’s a way of life.
