Echoes of betrayal and bloodshed linger here. Before you stands the Ko no Moronao Stone a somber monument. It marks the spot where a pivotal figure of the Nanboku-cho period met his tragic end.

This unassuming stone holds a significant place in Japanese history. Ko no Moronao served as the first Shitsuji or Shogun’s Deputy under Ashikaga Takauji. He wielded immense power both administratively and militarily. He led armies against the Southern Court loyalists. His victories included the deaths of generals Kitabatake Akiie and Kusunoki Masayuki.

Moronao was a controversial figure. He openly defied tradition. He famously questioned the Emperor’s authority. He even suggested replacing living emperors with wooden or metal ones. The Taiheiki an epic chronicling this era paints him as a violent greedy and immoral man. His name became synonymous with villainy. In the famous Chushingura play his name is used to represent the villain Kira Yoshinaka.

His ambition and ruthlessness however created enemies. He clashed bitterly with Takauji’s younger brother Tadayoshi. This rivalry ignited the Kannou Disturbance a destructive civil war. While Takauji eventually prevailed he initially lost to Tadayoshi in March 1351. A truce was brokered. A condition was that the Ko brothers Moronao and Moroyasu retire from politics and become monks.

They journeyed to Kyoto with Takauji. They never arrived. Near this very stone on March 25 1351 the Ko brothers were captured and executed. Uesugi Akiyoshi’s forces carried out the killings. It was revenge for the deaths of Akiyoshi’s father Shigeyoshi. Takauji powerless had to surrender them.
