Amidst the urban tapestry of Detroit, rises the Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a vibrant celebration of African heritage and culture, a beacon of color in a sometimes-gray city. Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum sprawls across an entire city block. It draws you in with its psychedelic colors, reflective glass, and twisted metal sculptures. Museum owner and curator, Olayami Dabls, envisioned a space that would stop passersby in their tracks. He succeeded. The Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum has become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum opened in 2002. It stands in stark contrast to its surroundings. The museum is housed in a century-old rowhouse. Inside, a massive collection of African beads, amassed since the 1980s, covers almost every inch of the interior. Beads hang from the walls and ceiling, displayed in glass jars, each telling a silent story. In African cultures, beads are more than just adornment. They represent wealth, tell stories of the wearer, and are used for healing. They were even once used as currency. Dabls saw an opportunity to collect these beads as their demand declined. He wanted to use them to reconnect Black Americans with their African heritage. Born in Mississippi and raised in Detroit, Dabls worked in an African history museum as he built his bead collection. When the land became available, he realized his dream of opening his own museum. Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum was born. Dabls didn’t stop with the museum. He wanted to create a space that told the story of African struggles and their influence on Black America. The outdoor sculpture park took 14 years to complete, finishing in 2016. Each sculpture tells its own story. One fence-like installation represents the African slave trade. A mosaic mural on the museum’s side is dedicated to African women. Dabls invites visitors to interpret the sculptures in their own way. The four materials used in the sculptures–iron, rock, wood, and mirrors–hold symbolic meaning. Mirrors, Dabls explains, are a way to look into both the past and the future. Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum continues to evolve. Dabls plans to create an area dedicated to artifacts that further represent the African journey. His commitment to telling stories about the Black experience, using his chosen materials, remains constant. Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum is a testament to the power of art, culture, and heritage. It is a vibrant space that invites reflection, understanding, and connection to a rich history.
