Amidst the bustling heart of Detroit, a sleek silhouette pierces the sky. One Woodward Avenue stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and a symbol of Detroit’s resilience. One Woodward Avenue isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in steel and glass, a narrative whispered by the wind as it dances through Hart Plaza. Commissioned in 1958 by the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, One Woodward Avenue marked a turning point in Detroit’s architectural landscape. This skyscraper, designed by Minoru Yamasaki, was his first foray into high-rise design, a stepping stone to his iconic World Trade Center. One Woodward Avenue opened its doors in 1963, showcasing Yamasaki’s signature blend of pre-cast concrete, narrow windows, and decorative tracery. These elements, inspired by Gothic and Renaissance architecture, as well as Japanese traditions, aimed to inject humanism into modern design. The building’s unique design, with its narrow windows and pre-cast concrete panels, was more than just an aesthetic choice. The narrow windows addressed Yamasaki’s acrophobia and provided a sense of security for office workers. The pre-cast concrete panels allowed for ornamentation and cost-effective construction, giving the building a distinctive textured facade. At the base of One Woodward Avenue, a bronze sculpture, “Passo di Danza,” captures the grace of a ballet dancer. Created by Giacomo Manzu, this artwork adds a touch of elegance to the building’s plaza. Originally, the sculpture graced the center of a reflecting pool adorned with gas torches. But due to leakage, the pool was largely replaced with plantings, changing the sculpture’s setting. Inside, the lobby’s stark white interior and three-story glass walls create a surprising sense of lightness. The chrome hexagon tracery, mirroring the exterior windows, adds a touch of sparkle. One Woodward Avenue was designed with practicality in mind. The innovative placement of the boiler room on the top floors allowed for an underground parking garage, a valuable asset in congested downtown Detroit. Individual fan rooms on each floor provided customized climate control, a boon for the gas company’s round-the-clock operations. Over the years, One Woodward Avenue has witnessed Detroit’s evolution. Once known as the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company Building and later the ANR Building, it finally embraced its current name, One Woodward Avenue. The building stands as a symbol of the city’s resurgence, its sleek design a beacon of hope amidst Detroit’s revitalized skyline. One Woodward Avenue’s story is one of innovation, resilience, and artistic vision. Its presence enriches Detroit’s architectural tapestry and serves as a reminder of the city’s enduring spirit.
