Does the name Xã Đàn ring a bell? No. But its ancient story might. Chùa Xã Đàn is a spiritual anchor nestled in the heart of Hanoi. It is also a precious cultural heritage of the capital. The temple stands on the ground of the ancient Xã Tắc altar. Kings of old performed sacrifices to heaven and earth. They prayed for national prosperity and peace.
Chùa Xã Đàn is also known as Kim Yên Tự. It sits at 4/106 lane Xã Đàn 2 in Nam Đồng ward. It is located in Đống Đa district of Hanoi. The temple is about 5km from the city center.
Imagine stepping back to 1048 during the Lý Thái Tông dynasty. This is when the Đàn Xã Tắc was established. It is where emperors offered sacrifices to the gods of agriculture. The temple’s history is intertwined with this sacred site. Over the centuries Chùa Xã Đàn has witnessed many historical events. Yet it has retained its ancient beauty and tranquility.
The architecture of Chùa Xã Đàn reflects traditional Vietnamese Buddhist design. Its layout follows the Đinh character. The current structures include the Tam quan. This is an imposing triple gate with two stories. It has eight roofs covered with imitation tiles. Between the ridges are dragon images. They surround a Dharma wheel. The two side gates feature dragons flanking the sun.
Next is the Lầu Quan Âm. This is a delicate stone structure. It has two overlapping stories. Its eight curved roofs add to its elegance. Inside stands a white stone statue of Quan Âm. She is standing on a lotus platform. Greenery surrounds the structure. This creates a peaceful natural atmosphere.
The Tiền đường is a large seven-room building. It is constructed in the style of hồi bít đốc architecture. The roof features a cuốn thư with the words “Kim Yên Tự”. Dragon heads decorate the ends of the roof. The wooden doors are designed in the “Thượng song hạ bản” style.
The Thượng điện or Chính điện has four rooms built in the “Thượng giá chiêng hạ cốn rường” style. The Nhà Mẫu has three rooms. It is dedicated to local deities. They include the Thành Hoàng làng Xã Đàn and Ngọc Hoa Công Chúa. The Nhà Tổ follows a Đinh shape. It consists of a Tiền Tế and a Hậu Cung.
Behind the Chùa Xã Đàn lies a half-moon shaped well. It is believed to gather prosperity and water. It brings life to the site. Next to the well is the ancient Tháp Garden. It is nestled under green trees. This adds a quiet, serene beauty to the temple grounds.
Chùa Xã Đàn preserves many precious artifacts. One is a stone pillar resembling those from the Lý dynasty. Some bricks date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. There are five stone steles from the 16th to 19th centuries.
Local people once worshiped Bảo Hoa công chúa at a nearby temple. After that temple was destroyed her worship was moved to the Chùa Xã Đàn. Today on the second day of the second lunar month people commemorate her. She was a woman who made great contributions to the people.
The temple also features a large bronze bell. It is one meter tall with a circumference of 1.6 meters. An inscription notes its origin in Xã Đàn ward.
Chùa Xã Đàn is more than just an ancient site. It witnessed history during the resistance war against the French. It served as a gathering place for soldiers. It provided food and care for the wounded.
Visiting Chùa Xã Đàn is like stepping into a living museum. It showcases the enduring spirit of Hanoi. It was officially recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Relic in 1990. Remember this name, Chùa Xã Đàn. It is where history and spirituality meet.
