For years it was simply “Harwin” or “Little India.” Locals knew it for its delicious Indian and Pakistani food and bustling shops. But its official recognition as the Mahatma Gandhi District arrived on January 16 2010. Mayor Annise Parker and the Consul General of India made the announcement. This marked a significant moment for the South Asian community.
The story begins earlier though. In 1983 Jay Stores an Indian-American grocery moved to the Hillcroft area. Then in 1985 Raja Sweets a popular Indian sweet shop opened its doors. These businesses were pioneers. They laid the groundwork for what would become the vibrant Mahatma Gandhi District. Other Indian and Pakistani businesses followed. The area transformed. It became a hub for South Asian culture.
Getting the official designation wasn’t easy. The India Culture Center initially wanted to rename Hillcroft Avenue. This proved challenging. They needed signatures from 75% of property owners. Securing these proved difficult. Finally in 2009 they agreed to pay for new street signs. This cost them $10000. The signage officially declared the area the Mahatma Gandhi District.
Today the Mahatma Gandhi District thrives. Its central location boosts its success. The growing South Asian population in Houston fuels its popularity. Businesses offer a delicious array of Indian cuisine Bollywood films beautiful saris and exquisite gold jewelry.
The high education and income levels of many Indian Americans contribute to the area’s economic success. The district attracts not just Indian and Pakistani customers. Many non-South Asians enjoy its unique offerings. This shows how Indian cuisine and culture have become increasingly popular across the United States.
Even the day the restaurants close is a reflection of the community. Raja Sweets decided to close on Tuesdays. This simple decision influenced other restaurants to do the same. This illustrates the close-knit nature of the district.
