Did the stones of Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church ever whisper secrets of a fiery past? This very church, also known as Sherbrooke St. Gilbert’s Church, has witnessed a dramatic tale of resilience. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its community, serving the Pollokshields, Dumbreck, and Mosspark areas of Glasgow. Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church began its journey in 1900 as Sherbrooke United Free Church. Its name is a nod to Sherbrooke Avenue, named after a family with ties to Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. The church’s elegant 13th-century Gothic design, the work of architect William Forsyth McGibbon, speaks to a rich history. In 1929, the church joined the Church of Scotland. During World War II, the congregation merged with St. Gilbert’s Parish Church. Interestingly, the St. Gilbert’s building was later moved brick by brick to Burnside. Another chapter unfolded in 2017 when Mosspark Parish Church joined Sherbrooke St. Gilbert’s, forming the current Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church. Sadly, just shy of its centenary, a devastating fire in 1994 gutted the building. Yet, from the ashes, it rose again, thanks to architect James Cuthbertson. The restored sanctuary now features striking modern stained glass windows. A new Lammermuir pipe organ fills the space with music, a symbol of the church’s rebirth. Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church stands not just as a building, but as a living testament to faith, resilience, and community. Its story is woven into the fabric of Glasgow’s south side, a reminder that even from destruction, beauty and hope can emerge.
