Journey with me back to 1962. Los Angeles International Airport welcomed its first international terminal, Terminal 2. This wasn’t the sleek structure you see today. This original Terminal 2 was a bustling hub for airlines from across the globe. A gateway to the world, it hosted carriers like Air New Zealand, Pan Am, and KLM. Imagine the thrill of international travel, the excitement of embarking on a new adventure. This was the epicenter of that experience at LAX. Terminal 2 played a pivotal role in LAX’s history, serving as the primary international terminal until the Tom Bradley International Terminal opened in 1984. But time marches on, and progress demands change. The original Terminal 2, having served its purpose admirably, was demolished. Between 1984 and 1988, a new, modern Terminal 2 arose in its place. This $94 million project, designed by Leo A Daly, completely transformed the terminal. The rebuilt Terminal 2 offers a fresh face to the world, with updated amenities and a more efficient layout. Today, Terminal 2 serves as a hub for Delta Air Lines. While Delta’s check-in facilities are in Terminal 3, passengers for airlines like Condor and Norse Atlantic Airways check in at Terminal 2. A unique aspect of Terminal 2 is its CBP (Customs and Border Protection) facility, a reminder of its international past. Although currently inactive, this facility holds the potential to once again process arriving international passengers. In 2015, Terminal 2 underwent a $300 million renovation. This revitalization included a major ticket lobby upgrade, improvements to baggage screening and claim areas, and an overhaul of the terminal’s technical systems. The renovation also introduced new technology, such as energy-efficient LED lighting. Today, Terminal 2 stands as a testament to the airport’s continuous evolution. A symbol of progress and adaptation, it has embraced change while retaining its crucial role in connecting Los Angeles to the world.
