Imagine green glass and white marble panels. That’s the Federal Reserve Building in Detroit. It stands as a testament to architectural evolution and economic history. Today, we will explore this landmark.

The Federal Reserve Building comprises two interconnected structures. The first is a three-story Classical Revival building. Graham Anderson Probst and White designed it in 1927. The second is an eight-story International Style annex. Minoru Yamasaki designed it in 1950. He later gained fame for designing the World Trade Center.

The Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank occupied this location until 2004. In 2012, Bedrock purchased the landmark. The following year, Rossetti renovated the property. It transformed into offices with roof decks and street-level retail.

The Federal Reserve Building Annex marked a shift. It was the first significant building downtown after World War II. Yamasaki designed it while at Smith Hinchman and Grylls. The annex didn’t mimic the original building. It made its own statement.

The annex features a curtain wall. It has alternating bands of green glass and marble veneer. A thirty-foot setback creates an entrance plaza. Landscaped beds add a touch of green to the urban space. Yamasaki believed architecture should create a livable and enjoyable atmosphere.

The building’s interior was gutted. It was converted to align with the annex’s floor plan. The fourth floor was removed. A penthouse now sits on the roof. It provides space for a cafeteria meeting rooms and a terrace.

Dan Gilbert’s real estate firm acquired the Federal Reserve Building in 2012. In 2013, renovations began. The Detroit Historic District Commission approved exterior alterations. These included enlarging the windows of the 1927 building.

The Detroit Media Partnership moved into the building in 2014. The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News occupied six floors. This brought new life to the historic structure.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Detroit Branch played a role in financial literacy. It coordinated Michigan Money Smart Week. This event promoted financial education to consumers. It provided free events and resources.

The Federal Reserve Building stands as a reminder. It reflects Detroit’s economic past and architectural progress. Its blend of styles tells a story of innovation and adaptation. The building has been transformed. It continues to contribute to Detroit’s vibrant downtown.
