A majestic structure stands before you. This is the UTM Mosque. It wasn’t always this grand.
The UTM Mosque’s story begins humbly. It started as a small surau in 1972. Back then UTM was known as the National Technological Institute. This modest prayer space served the Muslim students. As UTM transformed into Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1975 it evolved too. The surau was permitted to hold Friday prayers by the Islamic Religious Department of the Federal Territory.
This little surau was affectionately nicknamed the ‘Masjid Kayu’ or Wooden Mosque. It played a vital role in the university’s mission. It fostered personal development through effective da’wah programs. The mosque expanded gradually. It grew from accommodating 500 worshippers to 3000.
The increasing congregation demanded a larger space. The Malaysian government allocated RM 7.5 million under the Ninth Malaysia Plan. On October 24 2008 the Masjid Kayu was demolished. A temporary mosque was created from a converted student dormitory. Management placed the mosque under the Islamic Center.
The new UTM Mosque was completed on August 9 2010. It was officially opened as the Islamic Center Universiti Teknologi Malaysia International Campus Kuala Lumpur. Its grand opening was presided over by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This marked a significant milestone. The mosque’s transformation reflects UTM’s growth. It stands as a testament to faith community and progress.
