Across the Zappeion Garden, the Ioannis Varvakis Statue stands tall. It’s a striking marble figure, reaching three meters high. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a tribute to a man of intriguing contrasts, a man named Ioannis Varvakis. The Ioannis Varvakis Statue captures him in a majestic pose. He wears a grand mantle, his left foot forward, his body slightly turned to the right. In his right hand, he holds his will, a document that bequeathed his entire fortune to the Greek state. The statue, crafted by Leonidas Drosis, was completed in March 1884 and placed in Zappeion Garden in 1890. Around the main figure are four others. They symbolize key aspects of Varvakis’s life and contributions: Freedom, Marine, Art, and Industry. There’s some debate about two of these figures. Some believe they represent History and Thought instead. Ioannis Varvakis, originally named Leontis, was born in Psara. He was a sailor who turned pirate and even fought for Catherine II of Russia against the Ottoman Empire. Gaining Catherine’s favor, he became a wealthy caviar trader. Varvakis never forgot his roots. He generously supported the Greek Revolution and made significant donations to the Greek community in Russia. Upon his death in 1825, his wealth continued to benefit Greece, funding institutions like the Varvakios Market and Varvakios High School. So, as you gaze upon the Ioannis Varvakis Statue, remember the complex man it represents. He was a pirate, a businessman, a philanthropist, and ultimately, a key figure in Greek history.
