Resting beneath the gentle slope lies Fairview Cemetery. A serene park-like setting it’s more than just a burial ground. Fairview Cemetery is a significant piece of Boston’s history. Established in 1893 it served Hyde Park as its primary burial ground. Initially the focus was on roads and plots. Lot owners handled the landscaping. This followed the Lawn-Park Cemetery Movement. Curved roads wind through grassy areas. Few trees interrupt the expansive lawns.

The annexation of Hyde Park by Boston in 1912 marked a turning point. Fairview Cemetery saw increased development and new buildings. Today it’s a historical landmark. It holds the remains of many notable figures. Among them is James Monroe Trotter. He was the US Army’s first Black commissioned officer during the Civil War. Brigadier General Edward Beebe Carrington rests here too. He was a frontier fighter and historian of Washington’s military strategy. Hippolitus Fiske and Charles Jenney two founders of Hyde Park are also buried here. And don’t forget John Joseph Enneking the American impressionist painter. William Monroe Trotter son of James Monroe Trotter a newspaper editor and civil rights activist is also interred at Fairview. Rebecca Lee Crumpler the first Black female physician in the US also lies here.

Fairview Cemetery’s design reflects its time. It’s a beautiful example of a rural cemetery style. Winding lanes and landscaping create a peaceful atmosphere. The cemetery isn’t just about the past. The City of Boston continues to use Fairview. It serves as a burial site for indigent and unclaimed individuals. This ensures everyone has a final resting place. Fairview’s story isn’t just about the famous. It encompasses the lives of countless others. Their stories remain woven into the fabric of this special place.

Explore the grounds. Notice the subtle curves of the pathways. Imagine the lives lived by those who rest here. Take a moment to reflect on their contributions to society. Fairview Cemetery is more than a cemetery. It’s a living testament to the history of Boston and its people. It’s a place of remembrance and reflection. It’s a peaceful haven where the past and present intertwine.
