Gazing up at Cleopatra’s Needle, one might wonder how such an ancient monument landed in the heart of modern Manhattan. Cleopatra’s Needle stands tall and proud, a striking red granite obelisk against the backdrop of Central Park’s lush greenery. This isn’t a replica or a modern art piece. It’s a genuine relic of ancient Egypt, over 3,500 years old and carrying the stories of pharaohs and empires. Cleopatra’s Needle began its life in Heliopolis, commissioned by Thutmose III in 1475 BC. Its hieroglyphs boast of his victories, later embellished by Ramses II two centuries later. Originally one of a pair, it stood sentinel at the Temple of the Sun, catching the golden rays of the Egyptian sun. Fast forward to 12 BC. The Romans, ever eager to adorn their empire with spoils of conquest, moved Cleopatra’s Needle and its twin to Alexandria. They placed them at the Caesarium, a temple Cleopatra built to honor Julius Caesar or possibly Mark Antony. The temple is gone, but Cleopatra’s Needle remains, a testament to its enduring nature. In the 19th century, the Khedive Ismail Pasha gifted Cleopatra’s Needle to the United States to commemorate the opening of the Suez Canal. Transporting the 200-ton obelisk across the Atlantic was a Herculean effort, a tale of engineering ingenuity and sheer determination led by Lieutenant Commander Henry H. Gorringe. Imagine the sight. The obelisk, encased within the specially modified steamship Dessoug, arriving in New York Harbor in 1880. Its journey through the city streets, drawn by teams of horses, was a spectacle. New Yorkers lined the streets, marveling at this ancient giant making its way to Central Park. Finally, on January 22, 1881, Cleopatra’s Needle was raised on Greywacke Knoll, its new home overlooking the bustling city. Look closely at the base. You’ll see four bronze crabs supporting the massive structure. These are replicas of Roman-era supports, connecting this ancient monument to another empire long past. Cleopatra’s Needle has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations. It has journeyed from the sun-drenched sands of Egypt to the heart of a modern metropolis. It stands as a timeless reminder of our connection to the past.
