Did the name Cư mean anything to you? Probably not. But for the brave individuals who toiled in the tunnels of Nhà thờ Phú Hòa, “Cư” became a symbol of their resilience. It wasn’t a family name, though remarkably over ten tunnel diggers shared similar names like Cư Thanh and Cư Lực. “Cư” meant diligent. It was an unspoken tribute to those who tirelessly carved out this underground network, a testament to their unwavering dedication to Vietnam’s fight for independence. The story of Nhà thờ Phú Hòa, my friends, is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the unwavering spirit of the Vietnamese people. It begins long before the church itself existed, in the heart of the resistance against French colonialism. As early as 1947, under the very ground we stand on, the first tunnels were being dug. Located on high ground, amidst dense foliage, this area offered a strategic advantage. From these humble beginnings, the tunnels expanded into a 10-kilometer network stretching from Ấp Lộc Hòa to Gò Đầu. The tunnels became more than just hiding places. They sheltered key figures in the resistance. They served as meeting points, supply depots, and even makeshift hospitals. Imagine the scene: flickering oil lamps illuminating cramped quarters. Whispered conversations strategizing the next move. The tunnels were instrumental in numerous victories, including the defense of Tham Lương Bridge in 1945 and attacks on the Phu Tho bomb depot in the early 1950s. Then came the American War. The tunnels of Nhà thờ Phú Hòa once again played a vital role. Although no longer used for troop deployment, they remained a hub for covert operations. They witnessed the struggle, the sacrifices, and ultimately, the triumph of the Vietnamese people.
