“Welcome to the Detroit Masonic Temple,” I begin, my voice echoing slightly in the shadow of this massive building. This isn’t just any building; it’s the world’s largest Masonic Temple. Imagine that.

The Detroit Masonic Temple’s story starts in the 1920s. Architect George Mason envisioned this incredible space. Construction finished in 1926. The Detroit Masonic Temple boasts over 1,000 rooms. Some say there are even secret passageways hidden within these walls.

Originally, the Detroit Masonic Temple served the fraternity of Freemasons. Lodge rooms provided space for weekly meetings. Over time, the Detroit Masonic Temple opened its doors to the public. Now everyone can appreciate its beauty.

General Manager Ryan Groat calls it a “gem in the city of Detroit.” And he’s right. The Detroit Masonic Temple is a destination. Its elegant, masculine features make it a popular wedding venue. The chapel, also known as the asylum or commandry, hosts many ceremonies. Its gothic charm speaks for itself.

The main auditorium is a top attraction in the Detroit Masonic Temple. It has one of the largest stages in the Midwest. Many famous musicians have graced this stage. Ray Charles, The Temptations, and Jimmy Hendrix all performed here. Even Van Halen, Aerosmith, and The Rolling Stones rocked this very hall.

The Detroit Masonic Temple actually has three theaters. A second theater hosts smaller events. The third theater, however, remained unfinished due to budget constraints. This unfinished theater became a film set. It was used in the 2017 movie “Eloise”.

Interestingly, there was supposed to be a swimming pool. But it was never completed during the 1920s construction. Sadly, plans to open it have been scrapped.

Don’t miss the Detroit Masonic Temple’s spectacular ballrooms. The Crystal Ballroom is popular for wedding receptions and corporate events. The Fountain Ballroom is even larger. It hosted the very first Detroit Auto Show.

Adding to its rich history, the Detroit Masonic Temple displays panoramic photos. These photos capture Henry Ford’s 75th birthday celebration in 1938.

But here’s a darker tale some whisper. George D. Mason, the architect, supposedly went bankrupt funding this colossal project. His wife left him. Overwhelmed, he tragically jumped from the roof. Some security guards claim they’ve seen his ghost. They say his apparition walks the stairs to the roof.

The Detroit Masonic Temple stands as a testament to Detroit’s vibrant history. It showcases music, art, and stunning architecture. Hopefully, everyone can come and appreciate this majestic gem. So take a good look around, and let the Detroit Masonic Temple’s history sink in. It’s a story etched in stone and echoing through time.
