Originally known as the University Center Building the Wayne State University Student Center was conceived by architect Alden B. Dow. Dow aimed to foster personal development and informal education through multi-purpose activities and student services.
The Wayne State University Student Center’s architecture is striking. Dow consciously defied nature in his design. The building presents two distinct architectural units. The lower half blends Frank Lloyd Wright’s surface patterning. The upper half evokes Yamasaki’s formalism. This unique combination makes the Wayne State University Student Center a visual marvel.
Notice how the upper half seems pivoted from the lower half. It is elevated on posts. The seemingly random window arrangement adds to its distinctive character. The building underwent renovations. Neumann/Smith Architecture and WTW Architects completed the design. The aim was to create a vibrant and inviting space. The renovated Wayne State University Student Center now boasts state-of-the-art facilities.
Inside the Wayne State University Student Center discover a treasure trove of resources. Find student organization spaces modern meeting rooms and a grand ballroom. A redesigned food court caters to diverse tastes. Recreational spaces including a gaming area and dance rooms offer relaxation. You can find food at Starbucks, Panda Express and Taco Bell.
The second floor houses a significant piece of art. Walter Gropper a WPA muralist created the mural. Originally named “Automobile Industry” it was moved here in 1971. It enriches the cultural atmosphere of the Wayne State University Student Center.

Alden B. Dow’s legacy extends far beyond this building. He apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright. He designed numerous buildings throughout Michigan. He remains the only Architect Laureate of Michigan. His vision shaped the Wayne State University Student Center into a hub of activity.
