A wave of tranquility washes over you as you stand before the Igreja Evangelica da Foz. Its history whispers secrets of faith and perseverance. This isn’t just a church it’s a testament to unwavering belief. Built in the 17th century it stands as a silent observer of Porto’s evolution.

The Igreja Evangelica da Foz originally served a different purpose. It was the parish church of Sao Joao da Foz. This church was originally inside the Sao Joao da Foz fort. When the fort was completed in 1647 the church moved. It moved to the Chapel of Santa Anastacia. This smaller chapel was on a hill east of the fort. Think of the journey this church has taken. Think of the countless prayers offered within its walls.

The construction of the new church began after 1640. The Benedictine monks of Santo Tirso received land near the Douro River. They received this land as a donation. This land was ideal for building a new church. Construction continued for many years. The cornerstone of the chancel was laid between 1709 and 1712. The chancel’s construction was financed by the proceeds from the Foz bandstand. Imagine the community coming together to fund this magnificent structure.

The church’s completion was a long process. Several phases of construction spanned decades. Altarpieces and statues were added over time. The high altar was consecrated on June 23 1736. This involved many skilled craftsmen including Miguel Francisco da Silva and Jose Teixeira Barreto. Manuel da Costa Andrade was a skilled carver who contributed significantly. His work is still visible today.

The Igreja Evangelica da Foz is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living record of faith resilience and community. Its architectural details speak volumes about the dedication of those who built it. The church’s rich history is a legacy that continues to inspire. Its beauty transcends the physical. It touches the soul. This is a place where history meets spirituality. A place of quiet contemplation and profound peace. It’s a place you won’t soon forget.
