The story of Calvary Baptist Church began long before this building. Calvary Presbyterian Church dates back to 1868. It started as a Mission Sunday School. It was in a room above a grocery store. The school then moved to a cottage on Michigan Avenue. A permanent building was needed as the congregation grew. In 1887, they began building a new church. It opened on Michigan Avenue in 1888.
But the location became problematic. Meatpacking plants increased in the area. This brought unpleasant sights and smells. Also, new residents had customs different from the church members.
The land became more valuable to meatpackers. The church decided to move. Plans for a new church were drawn up in 1914. It was to be at Grand River and Vicksburg. Construction cost $70,000. The dedication took place on November 17, 1918.
The church grew rapidly between 1900 and 1940. Membership increased significantly. An addition in 1932 added classroom space. It accommodated over 1,000 Sunday school students.
The neighborhood changed again in the 1950s and 60s. Parishioners moved to the suburbs. Attendance declined. Calvary moved to a smaller building in 1991. It merged with Monteith Memorial Church.
Later, the Grand River building was sold. It became the Abundant Life Christian Center. Then it was renamed Greater Faith for Deliverance Church. A fire damaged the building in 2009.
Today, Calvary Baptist Church continues its mission. It offers Christian education. This includes church school and Bible study. They provide opportunities for all ages. They focus on applying biblical lessons to daily life. The church strives to be an education center. They offer courses and workshops. These strengthen the community’s wisdom.
