The bicycle and walking path will connect to existing trails on both sides of the river.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge aims to improve traffic flow. It is expected to accommodate 26500 vehicles a day by 2025. The project includes public art. Local artists created artworks on the bridge towers during construction. These murals were later donated to organizations on both sides of the river.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge connects to the Rt Hon Herb Gray Parkway in Canada. This extension of Ontario Highway 401 includes green space and recreational trails. In the United States the bridge connects to Interstate 75. This includes local road improvements and new pedestrian bridges.
