“Why is there a street named after an artist here?” you might wonder as you gaze upon the П. П. Кончаловскому Plaque. This plaque commemorates Pyotr Petrovich Konchalovsky. He was a prominent Russian and Soviet painter.

Pyotr Konchalovsky was born in 1876. He lived until 1956. His life spanned the late Russian Empire and much of the Soviet era. Konchalovsky’s artistic journey is a fascinating tale of evolution. It reflects the changing tides of the art world.

Konchalovsky’s father was a translator. He was also an art publisher. His father’s connections introduced young Pyotr to Russia’s vibrant art scene. The Konchalovsky’s Moscow home became an artistic hub in the 1890s. Valentin Serov and Vasily Surikov often visited.

He studied at the Moscow School of Painting. Later, he went to the Académie Julian in Paris. He also attended the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. This diverse education shaped his unique style.

Konchalovsky debuted at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1908. He then returned to Moscow. He brought Fauvist elements and salon training. By 1909, he actively exhibited his work. He joined groups like Golden Fleece and Mir Iskusstva.

He was a founding member of the Knave of Diamonds. This avant-garde group sought to blend French and German styles with Russian primitivism. Konchalovsky became the group’s chairman in 1911.

After serving in the Russian army, Konchalovsky’s style changed. He began teaching art in 1918. His first solo exhibition was in 1922 at the Tretyakov Gallery. He focused on still lifes and landscapes. His paintings showed Paul Cézanne’s influence. Later, he painted portraits in the socialist realism style.

Konchalovsky’s personal life intertwined with art. He married the daughter of painter Vasily Surikov. Surikov admired his son-in-law’s artistic talent.

Over his career, Konchalovsky created over five thousand works. His style evolved significantly. Before World War I, Cézanne’s influence was clear. Post-war, he became a member of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Fine Arts. He was also named a People’s Artist of the R.S.F.S.R. His paintings contributed to Soviet realistic art.

Konchalovsky’s legacy extends through his descendants. His son Mikhail was a painter. His daughter Natalia was a children’s writer. Her husband Sergey Mikhalkov wrote the Soviet Union’s anthem. Their sons, Andrei and Nikita Mikhalkov, became film directors.

In 2006, his heirs formed the Petr Konchalovsky Foundation. It preserves his legacy by organizing exhibitions. The foundation also authenticates his artwork.
