Beyond the gleaming facade of the Europark shopping mall, lies the real Taxham. A district brimming with stories, not of emperors and archbishops, but of everyday people. Taxham whispers tales of resilience and community. After the Second World War, Salzburg became a haven for refugees from Eastern Europe. Many found themselves living in difficult conditions, housed in temporary barracks. Imagine Taxham then, a vast expanse of agricultural land, largely untouched since Roman times. This very ground once bore witness to the footsteps of Roman farmers, their lives intertwined with the seasons. In 1954, Governor Josef Klaus made a pivotal decision. He allocated a significant portion of this land for new housing, a lifeline for the displaced. Taxham, as we know it today, began to take shape. Row upon row of apartment blocks sprang up, gradually interspersed with family homes, creating a new community. The transformation was rapid, occurring primarily between 1955 and 1970. This swift evolution from farmland to a bustling residential area is a testament to the city’s commitment to providing shelter and a fresh start. Taxham is also a testament to the city’s changing demographics. Two churches stand as symbols of this shift. Built around 1968, one Catholic, designed by Franz Wagner, and one Lutheran, designed by Eugen Salpius and Hans Laimer, they catered to the diverse spiritual needs of the new residents. Along with the churches, schools, kindergartens, and homes for the elderly were established, creating a self-contained community. While Taxham may not boast grand palaces or medieval fortresses, its story is no less compelling. It is a story of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring human spirit. Taxham reminds us that history isn’t just made by emperors and kings. It’s also made by ordinary people, building new lives and communities, brick by brick, dream by dream.
