On a crisp autumn day in 1982, Trinity Deliverance Church found its home. The congregation, led by Apostle Pastor Vernell Benjamin Washington, held its first service within the grand walls of the former Church of the Covenant on Christmas Day. Trinity Deliverance Church, a beacon of faith in Detroit, had made a remarkable journey. Established in 1970, the church had started its life in a modest building at Grand River and Euclid. Growth led them to Wyoming, and finally, to this magnificent Neo-Gothic structure on East Grand Boulevard. Trinity Deliverance Church’s relocation was a unique move, going against the tide of congregations migrating to the suburbs. They moved closer to the city’s heart, breathing new life into a historic building. The church’s story intertwines with that of its predecessor, the Church of the Covenant. Founded in 1863 as a Sunday school by Zebulon Brockway, superintendent of the Detroit House of Corrections, the Church of the Covenant sought to provide moral guidance. Supported by prominent figures like John Newberry and James McMillan, the church flourished. Its first chapel stood at Russell and Napoleon, eventually replaced by a brick edifice. The burgeoning Eastern Market prompted a move to East Grand Boulevard in 1907. The original 700-seat sanctuary, designed by William E. N. Hunter, proved too small. In 1923, it underwent a significant expansion, increasing its capacity to 1,000. This expansion also saw the addition of a five-story education building, reflecting the church’s commitment to community growth. Trinity Deliverance Church inherited this legacy of expansion and service. The warm, orange-brown brick, the multi-stage tower with its octagonal spire, and the lancet windows all whispered stories of faith and community. While the Church of the Covenant faced the challenges of a changing Detroit, Trinity Deliverance Church embraced the opportunity to establish a new chapter in the building’s history. Trinity Deliverance Church continued to serve the community until around 2019. The building now stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and the ever-evolving narrative of Detroit.
