Can you imagine a school named after a tennis legend? Here at the Althea Gibson Academy, we celebrate just that. Althea Gibson, a name synonymous with breaking barriers, lends her legacy to this early childhood education center. The Althea Gibson Academy, located on William Street in East Orange, New Jersey, isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to a woman who defied expectations and became a champion. Althea Gibson was the first African-American woman to compete and win at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals. She achieved this incredible feat in 1957. The Associated Press recognized her groundbreaking achievements by naming her Woman Athlete of the Year. She continued her winning streak, securing both Wimbledon and the U.S. National Tennis Championship again in 1958. Her accomplishments extended beyond the tennis court. She was inducted into the Eastern Hall of Fame in New York City and received the Candace Award from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. She also served as a special consultant to the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in the late 1980s. Althea Gibson Academy carries on her spirit. The school provides a nurturing environment for preschool and kindergarten students. It houses four pre-k classes, a pre-k special education class, and four kindergarten classes. The academy’s commitment to inclusion ensures that all students, regardless of their needs, receive the support they need to thrive. Two play areas specifically designed for early childhood learning provide a space for exploration and growth. The Althea Gibson Academy emphasizes a holistic approach to education, focusing on intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. The curriculum fosters a love for learning, empowering children to take charge of their educational journey. Althea Gibson Academy is more than bricks and mortar. It is a place where young minds are nurtured, where potential is recognized, and where the legacy of a remarkable woman inspires future generations.
