In the heart of Kolkata, a silent giant stands watch. The Tala tank, also known as Tallah tank, has been a lifeline for the city for over a century. Let’s journey back to 1909, when construction on this magnificent structure began. The Tala tank was no ordinary project. It was envisioned as the world’s largest overhead water reservoir. The steel used in its construction was of the same quality as that used for the RMS Titanic. The project was completed in 1911 and inaugurated in May of the same year.

The Tala tank stands 110 feet tall and covers 3–4 acres. It weighs a staggering 44,000 tonnes when full. This includes the weight of the water, a remarkable 9.9 million imperial gallons. This immense reservoir isn’t just a single container. The Tala tank is cleverly designed with four individually isolated chambers. This allows for maintenance of one chamber without disrupting the water supply to the city. A single pipeline feeds the tank from the Palta Water Works near Barrackpore. This same pipeline is also responsible for distributing the water throughout Kolkata.

The Tala tank has faced its share of challenges over the years. It withstood the devastating 1934 Nepal-India earthquake. It survived the bombings of World War II, cleverly disguised as an open field. It even weathered the fury of Cyclone Amphan in 2020. KMC engineers took a clever approach to stabilize the Tala tank. They half-filled all four chambers and cut the water supply to balance the weight against the powerful winds.

Even rumors and fears haven’t spared the Tala tank. During times of conflict, rumors have spread about the water being poisoned. This highlights the vital role this structure plays in the city’s life. The tank has undergone renovations over the years. One notable renovation began in 2013. This was a major overhaul, costing an estimated ₹250 million. The project addressed issues like steel corrosion and leaks that had developed over time. Even the wooden sleepers supporting the tank were showing signs of wear. The renovations were strategically planned, one chamber at a time, ensuring uninterrupted water supply to Kolkata.

Today, the Tala tank continues its vital mission. It provides water to Kolkata and the neighboring Salt Lake City. It’s a symbol of resilience, ingenuity, and the enduring spirit of Kolkata. The Tala tank is more than just a water tower. It is a testament to human ingenuity. It is a vital part of Kolkata’s past, present, and future.
