Did Avis Rideout ever imagine the impact a single promise could have? Here at the Chiang Mai Agape Church, also known as Nikki’s Place, that impact is palpable. The Chiang Mai Agape Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the power of love, a beacon of hope for orphaned and abandoned children living with HIV. In 1996, Avis Rideout, originally from Canada, adopted a young girl named Nikki, who was very ill with AIDS-related infections. Avis nursed Nikki back to health with unwavering love and devotion. Following this experience, Avis made a promise to God. She vowed to open a home for children like Nikki. That promise blossomed into the Chiang Mai Agape Church, a place where unconditional love, or “agape,” is the guiding principle. The home, always near its capacity of 100 children, provides a nurturing environment. Thai nannies and international volunteers shower the children with care and support. While the children have specialized medical needs, they also share the same desires as children everywhere. Chiang Mai Agape Church encourages them to pursue their dreams and goals. The Chiang Mai Agape Church has witnessed remarkable growth since its humble beginnings. It has expanded to include a small village called Jarawee. Five homes surround the main building, providing older children with foster families. A cafeteria fosters community and togetherness. A swimming pool, once just a dream, now provides joy and recreation thanks to generous donors. A multi-purpose building offers training in various skills, preparing the children for a brighter future. Even a mother-baby unit provides shelter for pregnant women and mothers in need. Chiang Mai Agape Church extends its love beyond its walls, supporting Project Lek. This project helps at-risk children remain with their families. The church also has future plans for long-term care for the grandmothers who have stepped in to care for children who have lost their parents. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chiang Mai Agape Church remains a symbol of resilience. Though volunteer programs were temporarily halted, the community’s spirit of generosity persevered. The children and staff remained safe and healthy, a true blessing. Here at the Chiang Mai Agape Church, love is the only thing that’s contagious.
