Amidst the bustling modernity of Siam Square, a relic of Bangkok’s cinematic golden age awaits. The Scala Cinema stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. It offers a nostalgic escape into the world of classic movie-going. The Scala first opened its doors on December 31, 1969. The inaugural film was “The Undefeated,” a Western starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson. This single-screen cinema, with its thousand seats, offered a stark contrast to the multiplex experience emerging elsewhere.

The Scala was part of the Apex group of cinemas. These included the Siam, Lido, and Scala. Each played a significant role in Bangkok’s entertainment landscape. The Siam, sadly, was destroyed by fire during the 2010 political protests. The Lido, after a fire and subsequent renovation, eventually closed its doors in 2018, later reopening as a performing arts venue. The Scala persevered, becoming the last of its kind in Bangkok. The Scala Cinema was not just a place to watch movies. It was an experience. From the moment you stepped into the grand entrance, you were transported to a different time. A massive Italian chandelier illuminated the art deco interior, casting a warm glow on the grand staircase and ornate details.

The staff, often seen in their distinctive yellow jackets and bow ties, added to the old-world charm. Tickets were still ripped from booklets, seat numbers handwritten. This personal touch further enhanced the unique atmosphere. The Scala was more than just a cinema. It was a community hub, a place where film lovers gathered to appreciate both classic and independent films. It hosted film festivals. It became a landmark in Siam Square. The cinema even became the subject of a documentary, screened at the Salaya International Documentary Film Festival in 2016, cementing its place in Thai cinematic history.

Sadly, the Scala closed its doors on July 5, 2020. The final film shown was the poignant “Cinema Paradiso,” a fitting farewell to this beloved cinema. Its closure marked the end of an era. The Scala Cinema’s legacy, however, lives on. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of single-screen cinemas in Bangkok. It also stands as a testament to the enduring power of classic movie-going experiences. While the future of the building remains uncertain, the Scala’s place in Bangkok’s cultural history is secure.
