Consider the buzz of anticipation. It filled the air on April 14, 1973. This was the day the Congress Center Hamburg, or CCH, first opened its doors.

The CCH stands as Germany’s first convention center. The city planned it to boost tourism. They wanted to attract convention-goers. Originally, planners wanted to build it in Karolinenviertel. This idea was rejected. It would have destroyed existing buildings. Instead, they chose Planten un Blomen as the location.

The opening ceremony had 3,000 attendees. However, the speaker system malfunctioned. This led to two hours of noise. The original design was criticized as a bunker. Military officials liked the lack of windows during the Cold War. They feared spies.

Over time, the CCH expanded to increase capacity. This expansion was controversial initially. It encroached on the adjacent park. The foyer and restaurant annex were renovated in 2000. Hall H opened in 2006. This added a roof garden to the complex.

A contest to overhaul the CCH occurred in 2014. Tim Hupe Architects won. The initial project cost was 194 million euros. In 2017, they discovered polychlorinated biphenyls and asbestos. This required further work. The renovation added capacity and overhauled many rooms. The heritage-listed brick walls and aluminum jug lights were retained. The old foyer was replaced with a multi-story one. It featured large glass windows. It also boasts the world’s largest pendant light. A passage was added parallel to the halls. This allows different users to occupy them concurrently. The renovated center opened in 2022. The increased cost was 297 million euros. Asbestos contamination and the COVID-19 pandemic caused this.

The CCH has hosted the Chaos Communication Conference multiple times. It also hosted Eurofurence. Political party conferences have also been held here. Helmut Kohl, Angela Merkel, Willy Brandt, and Helmut Schmidt have all spoken here.

Besides congresses, the CCH has hosted concerts. Queen, ABBA, Hans Zimmer, and Deep Purple have performed here. Udo Jürgens even had a bathtub installed in a cloakroom. He did not like showering.

The CCH is near Planten un Blomen. It is also close to the University of Hamburg and Hamburg Dammtor station. The Radisson Blu Hotel Hamburg is directly connected. It opened in 1973 and was renovated in 2009.

The building has a capacity of 105,000 square meters. It has over 50 rooms. It can accommodate up to 12,000 people. The roof garden on Hall H is the largest in Europe.

The CCH closed at the end of 2016 for modernization. It reopened, designed to meet sustainability criteria. In 2023, the CCH celebrated its 50th birthday.

The CCH stands as a testament to Hamburg’s commitment to progress. It embraces innovation. Its history is rich. Its future is bright. It welcomes the world to Hamburg.
