On New Year’s Day 1921 a momentous event unfolded in Madrid. The Rotary Club of Madrid was chartered. This marked Rotary International’s expansion into mainland Europe. The Rotary International Sculpture we stand before today commemorates this significant milestone.

Angel Cuesta a cigar magnate from Spain played a pivotal role. He helped establish the club. He had previously assisted in organizing clubs in Cuba. Working with Ely Palmer the American consul in Madrid he orchestrated an organizational meeting in 1920.

The initial growth of the club wasn’t without its challenges. The secretariat favored a slow and steady approach to expansion. The Madrid organizers however wanted rapid growth. They sought an exemption from the established policy. The secretariat’s measured approach ultimately proved beneficial. It allowed for sustainable development and long-term success.

The Rotary Club of Madrid’s influence extended beyond the Spanish capital. It spurred the establishment of clubs in other cities like Barcelona Zaragoza and San Sebastián. A first Rotary conference for Spain was held in Barcelona in 1928. This demonstrates the expanding reach and impact of Rotary International’s work.

The Spanish Civil War in 1936 sadly interrupted Rotary’s progress in Spain. The Franco regime’s persecution of perceived enemies included a ban on Rotary. All clubs were eventually terminated in 1940. This dark chapter lasted until Franco’s death in 1975.

After Franco’s death and the return of democracy. Rotary clubs began to re-emerge. Madrid once again took the lead. In 1976 a group met unofficially before official recognition. In 1977 RI President Ernesto Imbassahy de Mello and Vice President Bernardo Guzmán visited. They were even received by King Juan Carlos I.

The Madrid club was officially chartered on June 6 1977. It was granted a retroactive charter date of 1921. This acknowledges the club’s historical significance. It recognizes the perseverance of its members. The sculpture before us is a testament to this legacy of service and resilience. The Rotary International Sculpture stands as a symbol of international cooperation and enduring community spirit. It reminds us of Rotary’s commitment to lasting positive change.
